Cemagref has carried out a study of the water balance in a test plot of the Réal Collobrier experimental watershed. The area, 154 ha large and underlain by crystalline rock of the Maures Massif, is characterized by its strong inertia and a change in the flood-runoff coefficient during the hydrological cycle. The test plot lies on the crest of the watershed and has been equipped with instruments for monitoring of the water balance of both surface and subsurvace: tensiometer cells, observation well screened from 3 to 3.5 m from the surface, neutron probe for calculating the variations in water reserves over 2.5 m depth, climatological station. The variations in static water level (SWL) within a borehole located near the stream, are recorded at the same time as the observations are made on the test plot. All measurements in the watershed indicate the dominant role played by geologicial structure in the production of runoff. This makes the watershed into a series of juxtaposed, independant, acquifers with a high retention capacity, which, depending on their position with respect to drainage axes, play different roles in the runoff regime. The hydrological treshold-type behaviour of the Vaubarnier watershed is easily modelled with the help of conceptual reservoir models.
