Volume II covers standard laboratory tests for the measurement of soil permeability,CBR value,shear strength,and consolidationm characteristics.References are made to British Standards and US Standards where relevant.Otherwise test procedures follow accepted in Britain,including a number of test methods or modifications which have gained acceptance in recent years.Shear strength tests cover direct shear tests on sands and clays in the shearbox,including "quick",drained,and residual strength tests;and measurement of the quick-undrained strength of cohesive soils with the laboratory vane,unconfined comprehension and triaxial compression apparatus.Tests on large samples are outlined.
