Résumé : | Flower-visiting habits of 6 species of cuckoo bees, N. japonica, N. orientalis, N. harimensis, N. nipponica, N. comparata, and N. koebelei, were examined in Sasayama basin, Hyogo Pref., during from March to June of 8 years, 1952-1959. The flower-visiting periods and adult abundances found on flowers of some common species are shown in Fig. 1. N. orientalis appears firstly in early spring, and N. japonica visits flowers up to early summer. As in the cases of other cuckoo bees, the female bees of Nomada have already many mature oocytes at the time of emergence, and visit flowers only for nectar sucking throughout their active period. Table 1 shows the number of flower-species visited by 4 common Nomada species in each month from March to June. The flower-species visited by 6 species are shown in Table 2. N. japonica, which is the commonest species in this district (Table 5), visited 24 flower-species belonging to 12 families from late April to middle or late June. Moreover, relatively numerous kinds of flowers were visited by N. harimensis and N. orientalis. Flowers most closely connected with these bees were Brassica campestris subsp., Taraxacum plalycarpum, and Ranunculus acris var. (Tables 2 and 4). In general, bees with nesting habits show their special preferences to the flowers belonging to Leguminosae or Compositae. But these cuckoo bees indicate no special tendency of preference to flowers as shown in Table 3. For the purpose of flower-visiting, the cuckoo bees, seem to be under no necessity of having a particular relation with a definite group of flowers, for they visit a flower growing near the habitats of foster bees only to suck up the nectar easily from it. |
