Various stakeholders show a growing interest for organic food and farming, which becomes a societal component. However, many debates still arise about the value of OFetF as a model, or prototype, for sustainable agricultures. Rather than questioning whether organic farming performs better or not to conventional farming, the main question addressed in this book is how, and in what conditions, OFetF may contribute to sustainable agricultures.
This book gathers 25 papers displayed into three main sections. The first section investigates OFetF production processes and its capacity to benefit from ecological regulations and the systems functioning to achieve higher selfsufficiency. The second one proposes an overview of organic performances providing commodities and public goods in response to societal demand. The third one focuses on mainstreaming organic ; with organics development pathways and up-scaling within agri-food systems and territories. As well as a strong theoretical component, this book provides an overview of the new challenges for organic farming and food systems. It questions the benefits as well as knowledge gaps with a particular emphasis on bottelnecks and lock-in effects at various levels. This book also highlights recent innovations and presents a critical appraisal of the successes and limitaions of organic production systems, with a view to improving them. It also considers the perspectives and future challenges for research in organic farming in France and Europe. It examines each field with leading experts papers and knowledge synthesis providing different insights and covers the keys issues facing organic agriculture in the world today |
