The history of the International Colloquia on Plant Nutrition, formelrly known as the International Colloquia on Plant Analysis and Fertilizer Problems, dates back to 1954. Where the early Colloquia were mainly concerned with soil fertility assessment, fertilizer requirements of crops, and methodology of inorganic plant analysis, the organizers of recent Colloquia have succeeded in intergrating konwledge acquired by scientists dealing with plant nutrition, plant physiology, biochemistry, soil sciences, agronomy and related disciplines. Their aim was to put knowledge of the physiological behaviour of plants to work in solving practical problems in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.
In the Eleventh Colloquium held in Wageningen, The Netehrlands, 1989, a wide spectrum of topics was presented, but almost all contributions were directly or indirectly focussed on the following themes, which at the same time clearly reflect the major areas of current concern in plant nutrition research:-nutrient acquisition by plant roots;-nutrient uptake, assimilation, and distribution in plants;-plant responses to stress factors in the root environment;-nitrogen fertilization in relation to yield and quality;-nutient management decisions. In the present Proceedings the above themes are covered by 136 refereed full papers, providing a broad and detailed overview of the latest developments and actual problems in pure and applied plant nutrition research.
