The principal exigencies that are expected to drive research in forest products in the USA are identified: (1) environmental concerns; (2) a growing demand for wood and wood fibre products; (3) advances in technology and manufacturing; (4) recognition of the importance of a strong foundation of basic research and expertise in the field.
